Building a Shopify B2B webshop in five steps

B2B analysis
We map how you sell today: customer segments, price agreements, payment terms, ordering habits, the role of your sales team and the systems that hold this data now. That determines which Shopify plan and which pricing model fit.

Companies, catalogues & pricing
Business customers become companies with locations and buyers, each with their own addresses, tax details and permissions. On top of that we set up catalogues, price lists, volume tiers, quantity rules and payment terms, per customer or per customer group.

Storefront & ordering portal
A custom Shopify theme with an ordering experience for buyers: quick ordering by SKU, reordering from order history, volume pricing in view and an account with orders and payment status. B2B and D2C in one store or each on its own storefront.

ERP, PIM & inventory
Companies, prices, inventory, orders and payments sync with your ERP and PIM through proven connectors, middleware or custom work on the GraphQL Admin API. The ERP stays the source of truth.

Onboarding & growth
Business customers move over in waves, with your sales reps as the first users. After launch we measure ordering behaviour and adoption and improve the portal on what buyers actually do.
Selling to businesses is not a consumer store with a discount code. Business customers have their own price agreements, their own ranges, payment terms and several buyers per location. We translate those agreements into Shopify's B2B features, so ordering gets faster for your customers and your inside sales team does less manual work.
- 01
Companies, locations and buyers
Every business customer becomes a company with locations, each with its own shipping address, billing address, VAT number and any tax exemption. Buyers get a role per location: ordering only, or managing the location.
- 02
Catalogues and price agreements per customer
On Shopify Plus you assign catalogues and price lists directly to a company or location, without a maximum. On Basic, Grow and Advanced you work with up to three B2B catalogues through Markets: enough for customer groups, not for agreements per customer. We advise which model fits your pricing policy.
- 03
Volume pricing and quantity rules
Minimum quantities, maximum quantities and increments per variant, and up to ten price breaks per product. Cases, outer packs and pallets are enforced in the cart, not corrected afterwards by your inside sales team.
- 04
Payment on account
Payment terms from 7 to 90 days or payment on fulfilment, with automatic payment reminders and purchase order numbers at checkout. Shopify Plus adds deposits and partial payments.
- 05
Approvals and draft orders
Per location you can require that an order is submitted for approval first, without payment at checkout. Your team adjusts the draft order and sends it as an invoice. On Shopify Plus you review orders automatically against rules, for example above a certain order value.
- 06
The ERP as the source of truth
Prices, inventory, companies and orders flow between Shopify and your ERP. For B2B, Shopify partners directly with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, NetSuite and Acumatica, among others; we connect Exact Online and AFAS through apps, middleware or custom work on the API.
- 07
B2B and D2C side by side
One store where business and consumer customers each see their own prices and terms, or a separate B2B storefront as an expansion store under your Plus licence. On Shopify Plus you can also adapt the theme per type of customer.
- 08
Sales reps in the system
Up to ten sales reps per location, who only see their own customers. They create draft orders, place orders on the customer's behalf and follow up on outstanding payments, without access to your entire customer base.

Your best account manager, available day and night.
Business customers prefer to order themselves, when it suits them and at the prices agreed with them. A good B2B webshop takes the routine work off your inside sales team: reorders, order status, price questions and payment reminders. That leaves your sales team time for the conversations that drive revenue.
B2B webshop or B2C webshop: the differences that matter
From the outside a B2B webshop looks like a regular webshop, but the agreements underneath are different. A business customer is not a person but an organisation, with locations, buyers and terms that differ per customer. These are the differences that shape the design and the technology:
| B2C webshop | B2B webshop | |
|---|---|---|
| Customer | A person with one account | A company with locations and several buyers |
| Price | The same price for everyone | Price agreements per customer or group, with volume tiers |
| Range | Everything visible | A catalogue of its own per customer or segment |
| Ordering | Single items | Cases, multiples and minimum quantities, often reorders |
| Payment | Straight away at checkout | On account, with payment terms or a deposit |
| Process | Pay and done | Purchase order number, approval or quote first |
| Systems | The webshop leads | The ERP leads on prices, inventory and invoices |
That is why building a B2B webshop does not start with the theme, but with the question of how you sell today: which agreements you have with customers, where they are recorded and which work your inside sales team does by hand.
Shopify B2B on Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus: what works where
Since April 2026 Shopify B2B is no longer reserved for Shopify Plus. On Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus you set up company accounts, payment terms and volume pricing; only Starter and Retail are excluded. The difference lies in how far you can go per customer:
| Basic, Grow and Advanced | Shopify Plus | |
|---|---|---|
| Companies, locations and buyers | Yes | Yes |
| Volume pricing and quantity rules | Yes, up to 10 price breaks per product | Yes, up to 10 price breaks per product |
| Payment terms and purchase order numbers | Yes, 7 to 90 days or on fulfilment | Yes, 7 to 90 days or on fulfilment |
| Submit orders for approval | Yes | Yes |
| Sales reps per location | Yes, up to 10, partly with more limited permissions | Yes, up to 10 per location |
| B2B catalogues | Up to 3, through Markets | Unlimited |
| Catalogue assigned per company or location | No | Yes |
| Deposits and partial payments | No | Yes |
| Automatic rule-based order review | No | Yes |
| Theme customised per customer type | No | Yes |
| Checkout extensions in information, shipping and payment | No | Yes |
| GraphQL Admin API | 100 points per second, 200 on Advanced | 1,000 points per second |
The rule of thumb we use: if you sell to a few customer groups with fixed discounts, Grow or Advanced is often enough. If you have price agreements per customer, many locations per customer, deposits or an ERP that syncs all day, Shopify Plus is the logical foundation. The old Wholesale channel was retired in 2024; anyone still running on it moves to the B2B features in Shopify itself.
Connecting your ERP to a Shopify B2B store
In B2B the ERP is usually the source of truth. That is where the customers, price agreements, inventory and invoices live. The webshop has to follow that data, not duplicate it. In a B2B integration we typically sync these flows:
- 01Companies, locations and contacts, including VAT numbers and tax exemptions per location.
- 02Price lists and catalogues, so a price agreement in the ERP shows up in the webshop straight away.
- 03Inventory per warehouse, so customers see what is actually in stock.
- 04Orders and draft orders, including purchase order number and payment terms.
- 05Payments and open orders, so the ERP knows what has been paid and your customer sees in their account what is still outstanding.
For B2B, Shopify partners directly with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, NetSuite, Acumatica, Fulfil and QuickBooks Online, among others, and with Akeneo and Syndigo for product data. Exact Online and AFAS are not on that list; for those we use apps from the Shopify App Store, middleware or custom work on the GraphQL Admin API. Since the Winter '26 Edition, EDI orders from SPS Commerce and Crstl can also flow into Shopify.
The busier the integration, the more the API limit matters. On Shopify Plus it is 1,000 points per second, ten times as high as on Basic and Grow. With large price lists and inventory that changes by the minute, that is often the difference between an integration that keeps up and one that lags behind.
Pitfalls of a B2B webshop on Shopify
Most B2B projects do not get stuck on technology, but on assumptions that only surface in practice. These are the points we test in every analysis up front:
- 01Not everything works in B2B. Subscriptions, accelerated checkouts such as Shop Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay, tipping, local delivery and pickup points are not available for business orders.
- 02Large orders have a limit. A B2B order holds at most 500 line items; customers who work with long order lists need a different ordering flow.
- 03One buyer belongs to one company. A customer account can be linked to several locations of the same company, but not to two companies. That shapes how you migrate your customer base.
- 04The pricing model decides the plan. Outside Plus you have up to three B2B catalogues. Finding that out after the build means reworking the pricing model.
- 05New customer accounts are required. B2B does not work with Shopify's legacy customer accounts; that switch belongs in the plan.
- 06Adoption does not happen by itself. Business customers have ordered by email, phone or through their account manager for years. Inviting them in waves, with your sales team as the first users, makes the difference.
Deciding these points up front prevents your inside sales team from correcting by hand, after launch, what the webshop should have done.
Frequently asked questions about a Shopify B2B webshop
Yes. Since April 2026 Shopify B2B works on the Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus plans; only Starter and Retail are excluded. Company accounts with locations, volume pricing, quantity rules, payment terms, purchase order numbers and sales reps are part of all four plans. Plus adds what larger B2B organisations need: catalogues and price lists assigned directly per company, unlimited catalogues, deposits and partial payments, automatic order review and a theme that adapts to the type of customer.
As soon as you have price agreements per customer rather than per customer group. Outside Plus you work with up to three active B2B catalogues, assigned through Markets: enough for dealers, wholesalers and distributors, for example, but not for a price list per customer. Deposits, partial payments, rule-based order review, checkout extensions in the information, shipping and payment steps and higher API limits for a busy ERP integration also call for Plus.
Yes. In one store, business customers see their own catalogue, prices and terms after logging in, while consumers see the regular store. This is called a blended store. You can also choose a separate B2B store; on Shopify Plus that can be an expansion store under the same licence. Which route fits depends on how different your range, brand experience and processes are per audience.
Pricing runs through catalogues: a selection of products with a price list, as fixed prices or as a percentage of the standard price, complemented by up to ten price breaks per product. On Shopify Plus you assign a catalogue directly to a company or to a single location, with up to 25 catalogues per location. That gives every customer exactly their own range and prices. If the price agreements live in your ERP, we sync them automatically.
Yes, on every plan with B2B. Per location you set payment terms of 7, 15, 30, 45, 60 or 90 days, or payment on fulfilment; a fixed due date is possible per draft order. Shopify sends payment reminders, customers can use a vaulted credit card and enter a purchase order number at checkout. Shopify Plus adds deposits and partial payments.
For B2B, Shopify partners directly with Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, NetSuite, Acumatica, Fulfil and QuickBooks Online, among others, and with Akeneo and Syndigo for product data. Exact Online and AFAS are not on that list; we connect those through apps from the Shopify App Store, middleware or custom work on the GraphQL Admin API. Which route we take depends on what needs to sync: companies, prices, inventory, orders or invoices.
Yes. Per location you can set that an order is not paid at checkout but submitted for approval instead. Your team sees it as a draft order, adjusts prices or quantities and sends it back as an invoice, with the option to lock prices. On Shopify Plus you can also have orders reviewed automatically against rules, for example above a certain order value or for certain customers.
Yes. You assign up to ten sales reps per location. They only see the customers assigned to them and can create draft orders, place orders and follow up on outstanding payments on those customers' behalf. On plans below Plus some permission levels are more limited.
For most wholesalers and manufacturers, yes. The number of companies is unlimited, a company can have up to 10,000 locations and a product up to 2,048 variants. Mind a few limits: a B2B order has at most 500 line items, and subscriptions, accelerated checkouts such as Shop Pay and Apple Pay, local delivery and pickup points do not work in B2B. We map those points in the analysis up front.
The Wholesale channel was retired in 2024 and replaced by the B2B features built into Shopify itself. Moving over means turning your wholesale customers into companies with locations and buyers, your price lists into catalogues, and your payment agreements into payment terms. We also set up the new customer accounts, because B2B does not work with the legacy customer accounts.
That depends on your plan, the number of pricing models, the integrations and how much custom work the ordering portal needs. Costs consist of the Shopify subscription, the build of theme and B2B setup, the ERP and PIM integrations and any apps. After the B2B analysis you receive a quote based on the scope, so you know where you stand up front.
